Curriculum and Parent Education Events
Back to School Night (September)
Parents and teachers gather in the classrooms to discuss the new school year, classroom logistics, activities and events. This is a great opportunity for fellow parents to meet and greet in anticipation of the year ahead.
Curriculum Tours (September and January)
These events are by far the best way to experience the MFS curriculum. Held at both the Early Childhood Campus (September) and the Elementary/Middle School campus (January), parents get the opportunity to sit in each classroom and use the Montessori materials themselves. In this way, they can truly appreciate what their children do everyday in language, math, sensorial, cultural and practical life. Teachers present the works at the early childhood campus, while the students present the works at the elementary/middle school campus.
Elementary and Middle School Overviews (November/January)
For parents of preschool and elementary students, these overviews are a great way to learn about what lies ahead for their children as they transition to the next level of education at Montessori Family School.
Middle School Parent Education Night (November)
Middle school parents experience a few hours in their children’s day. Morning meeting and announcements precede the chance for parents to do some of their children’s class work. This is a true hands-on experience.
Silent Journey (February)
The Silent Journey is a parent workshop that is an observation from early childhood through middle school to immerse parents in what the children experience on a daily basis. Parents will see what the child sees, experience what s/he experiences, and learn what (and how) s/he learns.
The Silent Journey has two parts—Friday evening and Saturday morning. It is required that parents attend both sessions in order to engage in the full experience.
Early Childhood Open Classrooms (March)
At this casual afternoon event, parents are invited to tour their child’s classroom, with their child as their guide. They have ample opportunity to sit and work together.
Welcome Events (September)
Each school year begins with welcome events at each campus that give new families the opportunity to meet returning families. This is a great way for friends to reconnect after the long summer break.
Spaghetti Dinner (October)
The annual spaghetti dinner is an MFS tradition that is almost as old as the school. The entire community gathers at the El Cerrito campus and enjoys a pasta feast and a wide variety of desserts.
Family Dance (December)
Students and parents from both campuses gather in the community room at the El Cerrito campus to dance into the wee hours of the early evening, while enjoying pizza and great music to get everyone moving on the dance floor.
Grandparents and Special Friends Day (December)
Students at the El Cerrito campus invite grandparents or special friends to join them for a morning of special activities in the classroom and around the school. It’s a wonderful chance for the children to show off their school to these special loved ones.
Ladies Night Out (January)
All of the ladies from the school look forward to this evening throughout the year. Hosted at the home of a different parent each year, moms, teachers, and staff members gather for a fun evening of chatting, cocktails, hors d’oerves and desserts.
Dad’s Poker Night (February)
Given the opportunity for a gathering, the men—dads, teachers and staff –break out the cards, chips and their wallets for an evening of poker. Proceeds go to the MFS Parents’ Association.
Spring Soirée (March)
This fun-filled, adults-only event is Montessori Family School’s biggest and most important fundraising event. Held annually, parents, teachers and staff have the chance to mingle, dance and bid on auction items, all for a great cause—supporting MFS.
Movie Night (May)
All MFS families are invited to bring blankets and pillows and enjoy pizza and popcorn while watching a movie in the community room at the El Cerrito campus. Everyone can vote in advance to choose the movie that will be aired.
Music and Art
Winter Concert (December)
This amazing musical event includes a performance by all students from preschool through middle school in celebration of the winter holidays. Traditionally, upper elementary students write and perform a song for this fun all-school event.
Spring Concert and Art Show (June)
Following a week-long show that features the artistic efforts of the students from kindergarten-transition through middle school, the students present a concert celebrating the Spring and end of the school year. The performance is a showcase of rhythm and a culmination of all they have learned in music this year. Preschool families are encouraged to attend.
